Moles, Types, and Characteristics
What is a Mole?
A mole (or the medical term nevus) is a common, noncancerous group of pigmented cells that develop in the skin. It can be flat or raised. It varies in color. Flat moles are located closer to the top layer of the skin (epidermis), and raised moles are housed near or in the deeper layer of the skin (dermis).
Reasons for Moles
Moles first appear at birth or childhood and can occur anywhere on the skin, palms, soles, nails, and mucosal membranes. Most people will continue to develop moles in adulthood, called acquired moles. Acquired moles should always be smaller in size and never grow larger than a mole that first appeared at birth or in childhood.
Types of Moles
Flat moles are called junctional nevus because the group of pigmented cells is located at the junction of the epidermis and dermis. Normally, flat moles are brown, and the hue is determined by the person’s skin tone. Lighter-toned individuals will normally have light brown moles, and darker-skin-toned individuals will have dark brown to black moles.
Raised Moles occur between the top and middle layers of our skin. It happens because of extensive sun exposure or age. These moles are formed due to melanocytic nevus.
Intradermal nevus: An intradermal nevus is normally similar in color to the individual’s skin tone. Lighter skin-toned individuals will normally have pink to skin-toned moles, and darker-toned individuals will have skin-toned to black moles.

Mole Removal Procedure
The procedure is simple. The primary goal of Mobile Skin Screening is to ensure your comfort during the procedure. A small needle is injected into the area where the mole is located with a local anesthetic. The patient may experience minor pain, like a pinch when the needle is injected into the skin and a slight burning sensation from the local anesthetic for a few seconds. This numbs the area, ensuring no further pain is experienced during mole removal.
Mobile Skin Screening will then complete the setup and provide wound care instructions. This typically takes 10-15 minutes, allowing the local anesthetic sufficient time to numb the skin completely.
